The Sikkim Manipal University is a joint venture of Sikkim Education Trust and Indian Government. The campus of University is locates at the Gangtok. SMU is as also known for the distance education programme. The distance learning programmes of University are carried out through Sikkim Manipal University Distance Education (SMUDE). The distance learning programmes are approved by Distance Education Council, i.e. DEC. Distance education courses are available in more than ten disciplines. 700 authorized learning centers are available for the distance education programme in all over India. The University also has learning centers in overseas. With the help of this centers university offers some selected programmes in different countries.
University provides many unique facilities to the students like EduNxt. Sikkim Manipal University is the only University in India who provides this facility to the students. The University also provides Education Loan facility to the student at very low Interest rate.
The University has won many prestigious Awards in the field of education and rewarded by many Magazines. In 2009 University received the award of Digital Learning ICT Enabled University of the Year at 5th E-India Conference. In August 2010 edition Careers360 magazine choose the institute as Best Distance Learning Institute. Forbes Magazine chooses the SMU as the 2nd Best University in India.
