About The Punjab National Bank (PNB)

The Punjab National Bank was founded in 1894 at Anarkali Bazaar, Lahore. It is the only bank to have started with the Indian capital which has survived even till date.  A group of leaders of swadeshi movement like Dyal Singh Majithia, Lala HarKishen Lal, Lala HarKishen Lal, Lala Lalchand, Shril Kali Prosanna Roy, Shri. E.C. Jessawala, Shri. Prabhu Dayal, Bakshi Jaishi Ram ad Lala Dholan Dass, started the bank. The team even had an active participation by the veteran freedom fighter, Lala Lajpat Rai in its budding years. The first expansion came in 1904 when two more branches were opened in Karachi and Peshawar. The 1947 partition saw PNB loosing its office in Lahore though bank continued to exist in Pakistan. PNB went on a acquisition spree by acquiring Bharat Bank and Universal Bank of India. PNB’s Burma branch was nationalised in 1963. The next jolt was the Indo-Pakistan war of 1965, when all the Indian Bank branches were seized by the Pakistan Government. PNB lost its head office.

The bank has its present office is in New Delhi. With a history spanning over decades, the PNB bank has shown massive growth with more than 5000 branches across 765 cities. PNB has been recognised as 248th biggest bank in the world, in a survey conducted by Bankers Almanac, London. At present it is the second largest government owned commercial bank in India. It is also the one among the big four banks of India in line with ICICI, SBI and Canara Bank. PNB has branches in Hong Kong, Kabul, UK Almaty, Dubai Shanghai and Oslo. The bank works with a rich pre-historic background and a spirit of giving good services to its customers. PNB customer base is rapidly expanding on a regular basis. It’s work has been recognised globally when the Punjab National Bank was given 1243rd rank in the Forbes Global 2000 list a credit to any Indian Bank.
