Madurai Kamaraj University is situated in Madurai city, Tamil Nadu, India. The university was incepted in 1966.It has eighteen Schools that comprises of around 72 Departments. The student strength for the distance learning program of the university is about 1.30 lakh. Madurai Kamaraj University have 109 allied colleges and it includes other approves institution and nine autonomous colleges. The university started seven evening colleges.
Madurai Kamaraj University is original name has known as Madurai University and it was named after the historical city of Madurai. After the two years of establishment the new campus has organized by Dr. Zakir Hussain, when they are President of India on Madurai. Since the campus was built into a beautiful university town with covers approximately 750 acres area and it was called Palkalai nagar in Tamil. In 1978, the university name was changed to Madurai Kamaraj University to the honor of ex- chief minister Mr. Kamaraj of Tamil Nadu.
In the year 1971, Madurai Kamaraj University was started the Institute of Correspondence Course and continuing education and after is changes the name as Directorate of Distance Education in 1996.TheDirectorate of Distance Education was recognized by Distance Education Council. Madurai Kamaraj University offered several courses like Diploma course, Post Graduate Diploma Courses, Under Graduate Degree Courses, Post Graduate Degree Courses, Research / Doctoral-level Courses and Self-Employment Courses. The university provide various services like university student hostel in hostel there are three women’s hostel (356 accommodation) and five men’s hostel (724 accommodation). In university campus there are three guest houses. The first guest house is for VIPs visiting the University second is faculty guest house for conduct conferences and third guest house is for Directorate of Distance Education. The university offers several services like banks, Health Care, Post Office, University Canteen and Co-Operative Stores are available in campus.
