Jawaharlal Nehru University, which is also known as JNU or Nehru University, was established in 1969 and is located in Delhi on the ridge of the Aravali Hills. The university was established with intension of encouraging higher learning in students. The goal was to make it a major university and center for Third World studies.
University also has its own library which is the tallest, nine-storey building located in the middle of the academic block. It has a very large collection of books, printed journals, newspaper, and annals of primary sources in it. Different floors are devoted to different subjects. University incorporates around 15 colleges which are dedicated to different subjects like social sciences, Biotechnology, Life sciences, physical sciences etc.
The university infrastructure is quiet attractive with red brick buildings built in mid-twentieth century. It is located in the southern part of New Delhi. It occupies the area of 1000 acres which also includes northernmost reaches of the Aravali Hills. Inside the campus, forestland is still maintained which is home to over 150 species.
University is aiming to achieve paperless transparency and e-governance in association with Wipro. They are also designing a wireless network which will enable students and teachers to connect to library. As the university is mainly oriented to research studies, there are only 5,500 students getting education in 550 faculties. It also incorporates four independent Special Centers related to study of different subjects like Law and Governance, Molecular medicines, Sanskrit and CITD.
University is also undertaking exchange programmes and academic group effort through signing of MoUs with 71 foreign universities worldwide. Students gather together after dinner to which well known personalities are invited. The Jawaharlal Nehru Students’ Union is very active and elections are conducted yearly without any interference of the management. JNU attracts students from all over the world which has lead to the formation of Foreign Students’ Association which help these students to solve their issues. There are overall 9 cultural clubs which arrange various cultural activities throughout the year.
