Canara Bank, one of the leading banks in India was first established in the year 1906 in the name of Çanara Bank Hindu Permanent Fund in 1906. The founder, late Sri. Ammembal Subba Rao was a known philanthropist. The organization was converted as Çanara Bank Ltd’; in 1910. It was again renamed as ‘Çanara Bank’ in 1969, when the nationalization took place. The founder, Sri. Subba Rao Pai mainly believed in the principle of helping the needy to improve their economic conditions through some good banking. The bank was started with a basic aim of social service, to eradicate superstition and ignorance among the people of India. Bank wanted to help the needy by providing timely financial assistance. One of the founding principles of the bank says that the bank intends to spread education among all to sub-serve the first principle. The bank with its very human basic principles has stood apart in the banking sector and has leaped forward to become one of the frontline banking institution with International standards.

The bank was first registered as Çanara Hindu Permanent Fund Ltd in 1906 with a capital of 2000 shares worth 50/- each had only 4 employees on board. Today it has grown to have more than 3000 branches all over the world. In 1992-93, Canara Bank became the first bank to adopt the directive principles of “Good Banking”. In 1995-96 it became the first bank to bag ISO 9002 certification for one of its branches in Bangalore. In 2002, bank achieved another landmark when it opened a ‘Mahila Banking Branch’, in Bangalore, which is a unique step meant only for providing financial assistance to women. In 2006, the Canara Bank successfully reached 100 years in the Banking sector. It is a stupendous growth for a bank which has maintained its humanity based objectives intact and also has reached out to millions of the customers to maintain its tempo in earning higher profits every year.
